Learn 3 Listening Techniques to Help You Become a Workplace Titan

In today's business environment, productivity, organizational management, and effort are considered key to success. Dr. Sarah Sarkis, Senior Performance Psychology Director at Exos, points out that one crucial factor for achieving a competitive advantage in the workplace is becoming a good listener.

Dr. Sarkis believes that a key characteristic of successful individuals lies in their excellent communication skills, and actively listening to others is an often overlooked but vital aspect. However, many people fall into the trap of listening without understanding others' perspectives.

To become a better listener in the workplace, Dr. Sarkis recommends the following three strategies:

1. Understand your strengths and weaknesses: You need to be aware of your listening abilities. Seek feedback from colleagues, mentors, or friends about your performance in conversations. This feedback can help you assess how far you are from your goal.

2. Reflective listening: During conversations with colleagues or clients, try reflective listening. Summarize what you've heard and ask the other person if it aligns with their intended message. If there are inaccuracies, ask for clarification or further elaboration.

3. Stay curious: If you find yourself distracted or unable to grasp the other person's point, try asking open-ended questions. This helps you build a good relationship and trust with the other person, demonstrating your willingness to accept feedback and learn from them.

Though becoming a better listener requires patience and practice, once you master this skill, you will be better able to make your team members feel understood and supported, thereby achieving common goals more effectively.
