American Express, globally renowned as the company behind the "black card", has consistently been in the limelight. From facing significant challenges in 2015, such as the passing of a designated successor and the termination of their partnership with Costco, to the appointment of Stephen Squeri as CEO in 2018.
Initially, Squeri's appointment was met with skepticism, but he proved his capabilities over five years. Under his leadership, American Express' stock price soared nearly 80%, and his annual salary reached $48 million, making him one of the top earners in the U.S. S&P 500 Index.
Squeri wakes up at 5:45 a.m. every day and is out the door within 15 minutes. Despite working up to 17 hours daily, he ensures he exercises for at least 30 minutes in the office to keep himself energized.
Here's his daily schedule:
5:45 - Wake up
6:00 - Head to work, reading emails on the drive
6:45 - 30 minutes of exercise on the office stationary bike; has fruits and tea for breakfast
8:00 - Start of the day's meetings
12:00 - Salad lunch at his desk
12:30-17:30 - More meetings and various tasks, including tea breaks, and making appearances in front of employees to break the monotony
17:30-19:30 - Takes calls on his way home, then dinner
19:30-22:30 - Responds to 150-200 client emails
22:30-23:30 - Relaxation hour before sleep
Beyond his daily tasks, Squeri dedicates 3 hours to responding to 150-200 customer emails. He states, "I read and respond to every email because we're a membership-based company; how could we possibly ignore them?" This isn't just a slogan for him. He spends significant time daily ensuring every customer's needs are addressed and met. He emphasizes trying not to work on Friday nights but dedicates around 5 hours on Sunday to prepare for the upcoming week.
The narrative underscores how leaders, through dedication and hard work, not only steer their companies towards greater heights but also create endless possibilities for themselves and their clients. No matter the role, total commitment and continuous effort are essential. Only in this way can true success be achieved.
