8% Research suggests Company Revenue Increased by About 8% During Four-Day Work Week Trial

Recent research by the World Economic Forum shows that shortening the work week to four days not only boosts productivity but also improves the physical and mental health of employees, and effectively reduces CO2 emissions. Speaking at the 2023 World Economic Forum annual meeting in Davos, Sander van 't Noordende, CEO of HR consulting firm Randstad, described this as a trend that businesses must confront. Valencia, Spain's third-largest city, conducted a four-day work week trial program in April and May 2023, with significant results.

  1. Boost in Productivity: Studies found that employees could accomplish more tasks in shorter working hours, such as a 40% productivity increase reported by Microsoft Japan.
  2. Improved Physical and Mental Health: Employees participating in the trial experienced higher self-perceived health status, reduced stress levels, less fatigue, and an increase in overall happiness and personal satisfaction. Over ninety percent of the employees involved in the trial wished to maintain the four-day work week, with their happiness index reaching 9.1 out of 10 during the trial. The study in the UK also showed a significant increase in family time, especially with male employees spending 27% more time caring for their children.
  3. Environmentally Friendly: The reduction in commuting days led to less traffic, thereby decreasing nitrogen dioxide emissions and improving air quality. Additionally, previous studies indicated that a 10% reduction in work hours could cut an individual's carbon footprint by 8.6%, which is significant for global emission reductions.

The trial received near-unanimous praise from employees, with 97% wishing to make it permanent. On the business side, 92% of the companies participating in the UK trial decided to keep the four-day work week. Companies worldwide reported that during the trial, revenues increased by about 8% and were 37.55% higher than the same period in 2021.

In a world where talent is scarce, the four-day work week has become a business necessity. Noordende suggests that bosses should treat employees as they would customers, offering flexible working hours and a hybrid office model, which has been proven to significantly increase job satisfaction.
