HKGCC Survey: 77% of SMEs Have Yet to Recover to Pre-Pandemic Levels, Cash Flow is a Major Concern
The Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce (HKGCC) has released the results of a survey conducted last month among local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The survey found that 77% of respondents reported that their business has not yet recovered to pre-pandemic levels. And among 39.2% of respondents expect their turnover to decrease further this year, 35.1% expect it to remain unchanged, and only 25.7% anticipate a turnover-increase situation.
The HKGCC survey was conducted between 24 July to 31 July to understand the challenges currently encountered by SMEs. The majority of the surveyed companies were in the professional and business services sector (31.1%), followed by import/export, wholesale (24.3%), manufacturing (16.2%), and retail (9.5%).
The survey result shows that "cash flow" was cited as the biggest challenge for the next 12 months by 74.3% of SMEs, followed by "high rents" (33.8%) and "high labor costs" (25.7%).
Despite facing cash flow difficulties, 44.6% of SMEs are considering lowering prices to attract customers, a move that the Chamber worries could lead to a vicious cycle. To alleviate cash flow pressure, 23% of surveyed companies plan to reduce staffs.
Although the government has launched numerous programs and measures, 21.6% and 24.3% of respondents reported that they were either very difficult or difficult to obtain financing respectively, which means nearly half of all surveyed SMEs are struggling to secure financing. While the government has established 40 funding schemes, only 54.1% of surveyed companies have applied for at least one. Approximately three-quarters of companies indicated that they were discouraged from applying for funding due to lengthy processing times and complex application procedures.
To provide more support for SMEs, HKGCC believes that the government should first prioritize providing funding channels, then reducing red tape, and facilitating business connections and collaboration.
