Ben Silbermann, co-founder of Pinterest: "Don't take too much advice." He notes that Most people who have a lot of advice to give with a few exceptions generalize whatever they did, which may not necessarily apply to others or to different businesses. Ben Silbermann believes that each company has its own unique path of development, and entrepreneurs should not blindly imitate the success models of their predecessors.
"Every company carves its own path, and [founders] are under pressure to make their startups look like the last successful company everyone remembers."
The outside world has always been curious whether Pinterest's invite-only membership strategy contributed to its success. Silbermann states that this can't be verified through A/B testing, and perhaps if this strategy hadn't been implemented initially, Pinterest might have attracted users faster. He emphasizes that startups should focus on building their own uniqueness, rather than simply imitating others.
"If you don't take care of yourself in the process you won't be a part of the ride."
Furthermore, Silbermann also advises that maintaining personal relationships unrelated to work is very important during the entrepreneurial process. He suggests discussing life, sports, and other non-work-related topics in conversations, which can help maintain mental health. He mentions that while taking care of oneself, it's also important to remember those who have offered their help.
"Just built things and find out if they work."
His final piece of advice is not to overthink problems. He admits to having overthought issues himself and encourages entrepreneurs to just go for it and discover if it works.
In the pursuit of innovation and success, entrepreneurs should learn to think independently, identify and remember advice that truly helps, and also maintain a balance in life, appreciating those who support them from behind.
