According to the official recognition by the World Health Organization in 2019, professional burnout is a workplace phenomenon resulting from "unmanaged long-term workplace stress" and has become a disease in modern workplaces. When we are constantly under high-pressure situations, our emotional resources gradually deplete. Harvard psychologist Debbie Sorensen reminds us to be aware of the following three warning signs that your work environment may be pushing you towards the edge of professional burnout.

  1. High employee turnover
    Frequent employee resignations or large-scale layoffs may indicate cultural issues within the company. Working in an environment with a shortage of manpower increases the intensity of labour and therefore increases the risk of professional burnout. At the same time, it may also reflect a lack of attention from the company's management towards the needs of employees.
  2. Lack of autonomy
    Restricted autonomy in work patterns is also a significant factor contributing to professional burnout. When you cannot decide on your own work methods or schedule, the pressure significantly increases. Sorensen warns that being under constant micromanagement for extended periods can leave employees feeling mentally and physically exhausted.
  3. Intense workplace competition
    If your work environment lacks support or if competition among colleagues is excessively fierce, it can increase your stress levels and lead to professional burnout. Sorensen suggests that establishing good relationships with colleagues and creating a supportive work environment allows you to freely express yourself in your work instead of expending energy on competing with others.

Professional burnout is not unavoidable. When we recognize these warning signs and take action early on, it helps us maintain emotional well-being and enables us to better cope with work-related stress.
